The Veterans of Foreign Wars started the observance of May 1 st as Loyalty Day in the 1930's as a deterrent to the anti-American activities of Communist agitators during parades in our country.

It proved to be very effective and was, after many years, officially recognized and signed into law in 1958.

The year, 2002, marks the 44 th anniversary of Loyalty Day. The Department of California will celebrate this special day with a "Program in the Park", to be held in Bakersfield on May 4 th . It will provide an opportunity for all of us, friends and neighbors, to spend a few hours in an outdoor setting as we listen to patriotic music, reflect on our history, give thanks for our freedoms and reaffirm our loyalty to our great nation.

As Department Chairman, I urge each Post and District to plan a similar Loyalty Day Program. Try to schedule it for May 1st and, if possible, abandon the traditional indoor setting - move outdoors and get some fresh air! Select a Chairman that is willing to put forth the additional effect needed to ensure a successful program and appoint a committee to help him or her with the details.

Contact your Congress and Senate Representatives, the County Board of Supervisors and your local Mayor. Ask them for a proclamation designating May 1 st as "Loyalty Day" and invite them to participate in your program. Ask other groups to participate and above all, use the media and get the local community involved!!

Information to help plan your program is available from the VFW Americanism Director, 406 West 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111. Remember, a well-planned program will enhance the VFW image in your community and will also reflect your own pride in your country.

Loyalty Day programs should be reported under Americanism using the Program Reporting Form (CAVFW FORM-12). Awards will be presented to the Post and District with the best overall Loyalty Day Program. Any Post or District should submit the program information using the Award Recognition Report Form (CAVFW FORM-11)
